Rodger Fox Quintet

Rodger Fox Quintet with Erna Ferry

No stranger to Paekakariki's Mulled Wine Concerts.

Jazz - lovers in Kapiti will soon have a unique opportunity to hear the very best  combo in New Zealand when Rodger Fox and his Jazz Ensemble come to the delightful Memorial Hall in Paekakariki on Sunday 24 May at 2.30.

Rodger Fox is New Zealand's foremost jazz trombonist, big band leader , jazz educator and arranger. He is bringing five musicians from the big band, together with special guest jazz singer Erna Ferry. They will be playing the best of swing jazz, blues and a touch of latin.

Currently he is in LA, mixing a recording for a new CD with Michael Houstoun and The Big Band.

Holder of the ONZM and Hon Doctorate of Music,  Rodger has performed with his Big Band at several international Music festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival.  He is Senior Lecturer at the New Zealand School of Music.

Erna Ferry hails from the Manawatu and has performed at many of New Zealand's leading  jazz festivals as well as singing in the USA, at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the E- String Club in Las Vegas and various venues in Los Angeles.

"The concert is part of a now well- established Memorial Day Weekend run by the  Kapiti  U.S. Marines Trust, Mulled Wine Concerts and the Kapiti Joggers and Walkers Club. It celebrates and commemorates the 74th anniversary of the American armed services 'friendly invasion' of New Zealand from 1942 - 1944.
The concert at 2.30 pm on Sunday ( May 24) sets the scene - celebrating the fun and friendships enjoyed by Kiwis and Marines during this short but intense period. The 'In the Footsteps of the Marines' fun run and walk starting at 9am on Sunday morning acknowledges the training endeavour of the 15,000 Marines who lived in the three Paekakariki Marines Camps during World War 11.  And Memorial Day, the U.S. equivalent of Anzac Day, is celebrated with a service at the U.S. Marines Memorial in Queen Elizabeth Park at 10am on Monday May 25.

This is a great opportunity for people who loved through these times, their children and grandchildren, to visit the Kapiti Coast, enjoy a fantastic swing concert from the legendary Rodger Fox  Ensemble, challenge themselves to a brilliantly organised run or walk through the park, or be part of the Memorial Day  service", says Mulled Wine Concert organiser Mary Gow.
