The Linkwood Guitar Duo

The Linkwood Guitar Duo (Owen Moriarty and Jane Curry) with Sir Jon Trimmer

What could possibly connect a stunning New Zealand Guitar Duo with Sir Jon Trimmer? Answer: they are both the biggest names in New Zealand in their fields - classical guitar and ballet, respectively. "The guitars play and Sir Jon's paintings dance to their tunes...what more to be said" says Mary Gow, mastermind behind the concert series.

The Linkwood Guitar Duo is Jane Curry and Owen Moriarty. Kapiti's Mulled Wine Concerts has invited them to play in the beach-front Paekakariki Memorial Hall on Sunday 12 August at 2.30 pm where they will appear fresh from playing concerts in Mexico, the USA and Australia with the New Zealand Guitar Quartet. They will present a programme of music for two guitars featuring works by New Zealand composers John Psathas, Jack Body and Anthony Richie. This vibrant home-grown music will be placed alongside a beautiful and creative rendering of Sakura (Variations) by Polish composer Marek Pasiezcy and the charming and elegant Grande Duo by the nineteenth-century composer Napoleon Coste. Other guitar favourite pieces remain a surprise for the day!

Dr Jane Curry is head of the guitar programme at the NZ School of Music where she balances solo and chamber music engagements with the coordination of the largest classical guitar programme in the country. Owen Moriarty studied in New Zealand for his Masters degree and continued at the University of Southern California. He tours regularly with Arts on Tour and Chamber Music NZ and has performed widely abroad.

Mulled Wine Concerts, based in Paekakariki is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Organiser Mary Gow is bringing to Kapiti audiences the very best music from New Zealand and overseas.

Mary has also persuaded Paekakariki's (and New Zealand's) favourite dancer Sir Jon Trimmer of the Royal New Zealand Ballet company to display some of his paintings to liven up the wood-panelled walls of the venue.

Sir Jon Trimmer trained with Yvonne Rust at Wellington Technical College Art School in the early 1950s .He has painted for as long as he has danced. He has performed with Dame Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev and Erik Bruhn. He was knighted in 1999 for his services to ballet. He has had exhibitions with WAG, Wellington Artists Group, the Thistle Gallery, Wellington , St Arts Gallery in Cuba Street and at the Waikanae Hotel. His paintings and pottery are in various locations in New Zealand. Lady Jacqui Trimmer will exhibit some of her paintings of cats.

The August concert will indeed be one to anticipate. "A grand finale to our 2018 season", says Mary.
