Otis Prescott Mason
Otis Prescott Mason
Today's audience gets the privilege of listening to a young pianist at the start of what promises to be a stellar career. Otis is a Wellington-born pianist, an old boy of St Patrick's School and currently a classical performance student at Victoria University of Wellington's New Zealand School of Music. He began his piano studies with Erin Taylor at the age of five, and while he became good quite quickly says he didn't start to truly enjoy it until he was a teenager. He studied with Emma Sayers from 2018-2020. Since 2018, he has been studying under his current tutor Dr. Jian Liu at NZSM. Otis plays frequently around Wellington as both a soloist and collaborative pianist, in venues such as St Andrew's on The Terrace, St Paul's Cathedral, Old St Paul's, and the Adam Concert Room.
He has been highly successful as a competition pianist, winning numerous local competitions over the years. He has also been successful in competitions at the national level. While still in high school, Otis was awarded first prize at the 2020 New Zealand Junior Piano Competition and more recently was awarded first prize and several special prizes at the Lewis Eady National Piano Competition. As a result of these successes he was invited to perform in many concert series and festivals including the New Zealand International Music Festival, the Whakatipu Music Festival, and last year's inaugural At The World's Edge Festival.
He enjoys chamber music and was selected to attend the 2021 and 2022 Adam Summer School for Chamber Music in Nelson. Otis is also a part of Duo Zweisamkeit, a piano duo, with Sunny Cheng. He has also been getting into teaching piano which he started in 2017.
